Aparna Kaushik: The Most Powerful Design Tool Isn’t Freedom—It’s Restraint [Founder - AKDG, Architect, 297K Followers, India]

Aparna Kaushik is the Founder and Principal Architect of Aparna Kaushik Design Group (AKDG), a globally recognized design practice specializing in ultra-luxury residential architecture. With more than two decades of experience, she is known for creating timeless spaces that balance craftsmanship, innovation, and intentional design.

Q. What is one misconception people have about the world of ultra-luxury architecture and design?

Ultra-luxury is often associated with excess and abundance. While those elements may exist, true luxury is equally about restraint.

That restraint is reflected in every design decision—from material selections and furnishings to accents, spatial composition, and visual variety. More importantly, today’s homeowners are more conscious than ever of context, climate, and culture. This shift has fundamentally transformed the role of the designer.

Design today extends far beyond creating an “aha” moment. The modern definition of luxury demands more than exclusivity or visual grandeur. It requires thoughtful intent, a strong design philosophy, and outcomes that are both meaningful and responsible.

Q. Luxury is often associated with exclusivity. Do you believe true luxury today is about possessions, or something far more intangible?

The idea of luxury as merely something exclusive is an oversimplification.

Intentional luxury should create a sense of ownership rooted in craftsmanship, skill, effort, understanding, and time. These are qualities that cannot be replicated through acquisition alone.

Historically, luxury has often been used as a symbol of power and status. While that narrative has evolved, luxury today carries a greater responsibility. It must stand for ethical sourcing, authenticity, and enduring value. Most importantly, it should transcend fleeting trends and temporary fads.

Q. Has there ever been a project that challenged your creative convictions and changed the way you approach design forever?

At AKDG, every project is highly iterative by nature. We view constraints not as obstacles but as opportunities that guide the design process.

In one project, for example, we were challenged by the unusually elongated proportions of a site. Rather than resisting the limitation, we transformed it into a design opportunity by creating a series of introverted habitable islands surrounded by recreational spaces. The solution emerged through continuous exploration, discussion, and refinement.

Another memorable project involved a multigenerational residence where family members had vastly different personalities and aesthetic preferences. Designing a home that celebrated individual expression while maintaining a cohesive identity required extensive research and exploration. The result was a residence that balanced diversity with harmony through a unifying design language.

Experiences like these reinforce the importance of adaptability, curiosity, and a willingness to evolve throughout the creative process.

Q. Many people admire the final outcome of great design. What part of the creative process do they rarely see or appreciate?

What people rarely see is the depth of refinement that happens behind the scenes.

Our design process is allowed to run its full course, with every detail examined, questioned, and refined. This rigor enables us to faithfully translate our clients’ aspirations while honoring the expertise, effort, and investment that every project represents.

As a studio, we have never been afraid of experimentation—or failure. Every stage, from concept development to site execution, is iterative. We are intentional about the projects we undertake, the timelines we commit to, and the vision we pursue.

The same philosophy extends to our broader engagements, whether in art collecting, exhibition curation, or international design showcases. For us, great design emerges through repeated refinement, rigorous exploration, and a relentless commitment to excellence. That process is where the true joy of design lies.

Q. Do you think creativity thrives more in freedom or within constraints? Why?

We prefer to think in terms of restraint rather than constraints.

Constraints can feel limiting, whereas restraint is deliberate and purposeful. It is the art of selecting carefully rather than accumulating endlessly. In an age defined by abundance, thoughtful curation has become one of the most valuable creative skills—a discipline our studio has spent nearly two decades refining.

Creativity, in our experience, emerges from disciplined focus rather than sudden bursts of inspiration. While inspiration is valuable, sustained creativity is built through consistency, structure, and intent.

At AKDG, we follow a framework that is both rigorous and adaptable. That balance has consistently fostered stronger creative outcomes than waiting for inspiration to arrive on its own.
